A lot of people in the south still use the term Nice Horror Skull Shhh I Hate People Shirt without realizing how bad it is. Went to highschool with this kid who onlt figured it out senior year when he used it in a paper on the civil rights movement and the teacher got really upset with him. I truthfully don't think he meant anything bad by it but it is sad that a lot of this stuff is just ingrained in our culture.Wait, why is colored more offensive than black, though? My guess would be that it's because it comes from the Jim Crow era and we want to shed any closely-connected racial epithets. But then who said "black" is ok? And what if you speak Spanish and use that word for black? Is that worse, despite being a native latin speaker? Who comes up with these rules? People certainly love to enforce them, but many just seem arbitrary.This discussion on Reddit is often too American-centric. You'll see people talk about "because of Jim Crow" and "in the south they..." but these things are irrelevant outside the US. Just because we speak the same language doesn't mean we have the same history and culture, and that terms carry the same significance.
